Social Recreation in Eastern NC

Eastern NC Social Recreation Programs serve individuals residing in the Trillium Health Resources service area through summer day camps, afterschool, and adult programs. Programs are located in Winterville, Newport, and Wilmington. Residents of counties served by Trillium Health Resources are eligible to attend. Counties include Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Jones, Martin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt.

Individuals aged 4-22 may participate in the year-round programs. Hours vary by program: summer hours are typically 9 am – 5 pm and school year hours are typically 2:15 – 6:15 pm. See the location sections below for specific details.

Newport

With support from Trillium Health Resources, the Autism Society of North Carolina offers a variety of social recreation programs at our Newport center in Carteret County. Our Social Recreation Program serves individuals ages 4-22 throughout the summer and school year, in addition to year-round programming for adults 18 and up.

About our Social Recreation Programs

  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis throughout the year based upon program capacity. If our program is full at the time of application, and you are eligible for services, you will be notified of openings as they occur.
  • All participants must have a current psychological assessment with an IDD to be considered for the program. See FAQ’s below for requirements for diagnostic documentation.
  • All staff receive intensive, hands-on training, developed by professionals with extensive experience and knowledge working with individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
  • Staff-to-participant ratio ranges from 1:1 to 1:4 dependent on each participant’s needs.
  • Content is designed to increase social relationships and independence and includes structured recreational activities such as arts and crafts, music and movement, games, media, and outdoor fun.
  • Consistent attendance is expected. This ensures that our program is able to serve as many as possible. See attendance agreement form.

 

Summer programming

  • Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Summer hours for 2022 begin June 20 and go through August 12.
  • May include off-site field trips to pools, parks, and other local venues.

 

Afterschool programming

  • Hours for afterschool for school-age children and teens are 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • During specific school holidays/closings dates, the hours will be extended to 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Full-year calendar will be provided to those attending.
  • Afterschool program is offered from August 22, 2022, through the end of the traditional school year (request local calendar).

 

Adult programming

  • Throughout the school year, adult program hours are 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., though hours may vary based upon events and activities. Summer hours will be scheduled prior to June 13.
  • Those attending will be provided with a calendar indicating program dates and times.
  • Participants will engage in activities such as cooking, health and fitness, and social and coping skills, and leisure activities, geared specifically to adult needs.

Wilmington

All topics are geared toward unique needs of adults and strategies to teach each are based upon the needs and learning style of the participant.
