Seclusion and Restraint

Seclusion and Restraint – Students in schools in NC may still be placed in spaces apart from other students and staff (seclusion), and in other ways prevented from movement or action (restraint), usually to try and control behavior. Restraint and seclusion do not promote positive relationships among school staff, students, and families; can result in emotional and physical harm as well as loss of learning time, and can be dangerous to both students and school staff. There are evidence-based practices that can create a positive learning environment and de-escalate situations with students.
