Editor’s Update: Thank you for your advocacy supporting the Autism CARES Act. Our NC Senators, Richard Burr and Thom Tillis, have both signed on to the reauthorization bill, and we are hopeful that the CARES Act will be reauthorized before Sept. 30.
The Autism CARES Act will sunset (expire) on September 30 if it is not reauthorized.
Since its enactment in 2006, the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education and Support (CARES) Act has helped to train health professionals to diagnose and provide evidence-based services to people on the autism spectrum. It has also increased autism research and awareness. A new bill reauthorizing the law for another five years expands the scope to include people across the lifespan, as well as expanding services and supports. On July 24, the US House unanimously passed H.R. 1058, which reauthorizes the law.
The Senate must now pass the companion bill, S. 427, in the next two weeks, or the autism research, training, and services that are supported by the CARES Act will end!
