ICG Homes’ playhouses for the raffle to benefit ASNC were displayed at Lafayette Village in Raleigh.
On a recent frigid day, 6-year-old Joshua and 4-year-old Leah stood at their window in excitement, watching a new playhouse being delivered to their Raleigh yard.
“Is that our new playhouse?!” they asked their mom, Erin Isgett, excitedly.
The Isgett family were the lucky recipients of a new playhouse from ICG Homes and the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC). ICG Homes, a homebuilding company based in Raleigh, built and donated the house, plus two others for a raffle, which brought $6,000 in proceeds to ASNC.
“I’m just really, really excited about it. I think our kids are the perfect age to enjoy it for a long time,” Erin said. “We’re just really thankful for the opportunity for it.”
Erin said the playhouse would have several benefits for her two older children, who were each diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder as toddlers. Joshua and Leah also have a younger sister, Hannah, who is 2.
The children love to play outdoors, so having a space outside where they can use their imaginations is ideal. They are both bright and enjoying school, but “pretend play or imaginative play doesn’t come quite as easily to them as it seems to come to other kids,” Erin said.
The playhouse can also act as a bridge to other children, “something fun that they can invite other kids in the neighborhood to, or friends from school, or friends from church to, to come over and play.”
“’Hey, we have this new playhouse, you want to come play?’ I thought it would give them the opportunity to work on some of that social and communication stuff that’s just a little bit harder for them.”
The family has big plans for the playhouse, Erin said. Her father does carpentry, so she plans to let the children think about how they’d like to add to the inside of the large house. Right now it is a pleasant yellow outside, just like the family’s house, and has three windows, a latching door, and a front porch. She imagines they might add a kitchen or other play areas over the years, with the children helping their grandfather as he works.
But even before any additions, Joshua’s first inspection of the playhouse yielded this comment: “This is so cool!”
