No Pony Ride to Mars

One of my sons is a visual thinker and a verbal processor.  Yesterday, he told me he wants his life to change.  I asked him, “What does that look like?”  He drew pictures with his words while I wrote them down in an outline.  On a projection screen in his mind’s eye, he would like to see some areas of his life differently.  In a burst of earnest passion, he added, “It’s not like I’m asking for a pony ride to Mars or something”.

His image impressed me.  This young man knew the expression was fantastical and impossible.  He’s also confident to ask for the possible.  The Autism Society of North Carolina plays an important role in realizing my son’s goals.

For 40 years, the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) has been a go-to organization to make quality of life possible for people with autism in North Carolina.  Money raised from membership dues stay in North Carolina and support direct advocacy and educational services for people with autism, their families and for the professionals who serve them.

Today, I’m asking for the possible. If you have never signed up for a membership to ASNC, please do so.  If you have a membership, now is the time to renew.  Give here.

ASNC was one of my first calls when I learned of Ben\’s diagnosis, I was a wreck, knew nothing of autism, nothing at all except it was serious and that we would do anything to help him overcome it. Many other organizations discouraged me from the \”overcoming\” part but ASNC seemed to be sympathetic at least and supportive at best as I asked for my own pony ride.

The individuals associated with ASNC, the moms, the advocates, are wonderful, it is their experience that has given me the well to draw from during this dry season of despair. We have come a long way in the past two and a half years. I\’m certain that it is the influence of ASNC that has not only helped Ben to grow but has helped him receive many of the services and therapies he has received due to their ongoing advocacy in Raleigh\’s legislature. Without them I believe we would all be asking for too much, or at least feel as if we were.
