Camp Royall Staff

Sara Gage, Social Recreation Services Director

Sara started as a counselor at Camp Royall in 1997. She became Program Director in 2007 after filling just about every other role available at camp. After receiving her master’s in special education from East Carolina University, Sara served as a special education teacher in the public school system for three years.  Sara takes great pride in how Camp Royall has evolved over the years and loves working for ASNC.  Sara is thrilled to be able to take what she has learned at Camp Royall and create new social recreation programs across the state.  She feels grateful for the chance to work with so many awesome campers, families, and staff all year long.

Lesley Fraser, Director

Prior to Lesley’s full-time position as the Director of Camp Royall, she served at Camp Royall as a Counselor, Activity Director, and Assistant Program Director after finding her way to Camp Royall for the first time in 2006. Lesley’s life-changing experiences at Camp Royall gave her the commitment and desire to make the permanent move from her home country of Scotland to work year round at the camp. Lesley studied for her master’s in social work at the University of Edinburgh and is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Lesley’s favorite part of her job is getting to meet all of our amazing campers, getting to know them, and seeing them return from year to year.

Denise Dixon, Assistant Director

Born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Denise Dixon moved to North Carolina to attend the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where she played for the women’s rugby team and received her degree in exercise and sport science in 2012. Denise began her journey at camp in 2009, when she started as a counselor. Since then, she has returned every year in one role or another, serving as an Activity Director, Retreat Leader, full-time Program Coordinator, and now Assistant Director. Denise has also gained much professional experience from working in CHCCS as a high school EC teacher’s assistant and then as a teacher. She is thrilled to spread Camp Royall’s awesomeness to new and old families on a daily basis as we create and improve our programs.

Hannah Ryan, Fellow

Hannah Ryan graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in May 2016 with a BS in Biology. She worked for Duke TIP in Texas over the summer as a teaching assistant for The Human Body. Her ultimate goal is to attend a doctorate of physical therapy program. She is extremely excited to be a Fellow at Camp Royall for the rest of her gap year! In the spring of 2016, she took a class at UNC called “Autism in our Communities.” The Camp Directors were among the many guest speakers for this class. She has a cousin on the spectrum, which initially led her to become more involved with this population years ago. She has worked as a camp counselor for Camp Ann in High Point, a DSP for the Arc, and an intern for Persever8. Hannah is extremely excited to meet all of the campers and their families!

Curtis Sobie, Fellow

Curtis Sobie began working with Camp Royall as an Overnight Counselor in 2015, volunteering throughout the year with the Autism Society of North Carolina and returning this summer as a staff member. They graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and served as president of the ASNC Appalachian State campus chapter helping individuals with autism and their families in the High Country. As one of the new Fellows, Curtis is looking forward to working with all of the amazing staff and campers who make Camp Royall’s year-round programming possible and hopes to make its 20th year the best yet. They are also excited for the opportunity to continue working with the ASNC campus chapter program over the next year as Campus Chapter Coordinator.

Ashura Colquhoun, Fellow

Ashura Colquhoun began working at Camp Royall in 2015. She has served as a counselor in her past summer and automatically fell in love with camp. She is a recent graduate of UNC-Greensboro with a BS in Recreation and Parks Management. She believes it is truly incredible how camp brings so much joy to everyone who comes along. She is so honored to have the opportunity to be a Fellow and knows it will be a significant experience filled with hands-on learning, remarkable people, and plenty of wonderful times. She is thrilled to spend the 2016-17 year at one of the most amazing places on Earth.

Tim Connell, Fellow

Tim Connell graduated from Ohio University in 2014 with the goal of serving others and making a difference in the community through the field of recreation. While studying recreation, and shortly after graduation, Tim had the opportunity to work with individuals with developmental disabilities in both home and classroom settings, and he felt the joy of being able to serve and assist individuals who had autism. He was very excited to join the team as a Fellow at Camp Royall, where he can use his passion for recreation to make an impact in the lives of individuals with autism. There is no other place Tim would rather be than Camp Royall!
