Recreation Therapy Services
Options for Everyone Through Community Leisure Resources, the recreation therapy coordinator serves as a liaison between individuals with an autism spectrum disorder/families/care providers and community recreation providers. This includes compiling a monthly schedule of area events, locating providers for specific leisure interests, and providing autism training to the community recreation program staff.
Recreation Groups are currently available in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and adjacent towns), and include a weekly social club from September through April and a walking group during the summer months. Other groups may be provided as the interest arises.
Program Consultation is available to day/overnight camps, and other day and/or residential programs across the state. Recreation therapy services in this area include staff training, recommendations for leisure programs, organization of materials, and establishing a leisure area.
Staff Training includes applying structured teaching to leisure activities, adaptation/ modification of leisure activities, identifying community resources, and materials acquisition.
Icebreakers & Team Building activities are available to all Autism Society of North Carolina offices and programs statewide as well as non-ASNC agencies on a contract basis. These include activities for getting to know one another, building morale, and learning to work together toward common goals.
Additional Option for Individuals Receiving Community Alternatives Program (CAP) funding: Specialized Consultative Service is available to individuals with an autism spectrum disorder who have needs in the areas of community integration, fine/gross motor skill development, decision-making, leisure skill development, and/or health and wellness. Requests for therapeutic case consultation should be directed to individual case managers.
